Gold lot size, pip value and profit calculator

Enter your balance, risk, entry and stop. You get the XAUUSD lot size for that risk, what a pip is worth, the stop in pips and the profit at your target.

Starting numbers are illustrative, not a live gold price. Brokers differ on what they call a pip on gold and on the contract size, which is why both are settings here. Spread, commission and swap are not included.

Worked example

Say the account holds $1,000 and you risk 1% on the trade. The most it can lose is $10. You buy gold at $4,000 with the stop at $3,995, so the stop sits $5 away on every ounce.

With a 100 ounce contract, one lot loses $5 × 100 = $500 if the stop fills. Divide the $10 by the $500 and the lot size is 0.02 lots. That is 2 micro lots, or 2 ounces of gold.

Now the pips. Count 0.01 as one pip and the $5 stop is 500 pips, each worth $1 on a full lot (0.01 × 100). Count 0.10 as one pip and the same stop is 50 pips, each worth $10. The dollars do not change: 500 × $1 × 0.02 = $10, and 50 × $10 × 0.02 = $10.

The target is $4,010, which is $10 an ounce. On 2 ounces the trade ends $20 up, 2 to 1 against the $10 at risk.

The formula

Risk in dollars = balance × risk %. Lot size = risk ÷ (|entry − stop| × contract size). Pip value per lot = pip × contract size. Stop in pips = |entry − stop| ÷ pip. Profit or loss = (target − entry) × lots × contract size, with the sign turned for a short.

The calculator reads the side from the stop: below the entry is a long, above it is a short. Leave the lots box empty and the profit uses the lot size above. Type a number there to check a size you already trade. Most brokers take gold orders in steps of 0.01 lots, so 0.0234 becomes 0.02, and rounding down keeps the loss inside the risk you set.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate pips on gold?

Take the price move in dollars and divide it by the size of one pip. With a 0.01 pip, a move from $4,000 to $4,005 is 500 pips. With a 0.10 pip the same move is 50 pips. The contract specification of XAUUSD on your platform says which one it uses.

How do I count pips on XAUUSD?

Read the decimals of the price. If one pip is 0.01, every cent is a pip, so $4,000.00 to $4,000.25 is 25 pips. If one pip is 0.10, count the first decimal, and the same move is 2.5 pips. Set the calculator to the pip your platform shows.

What is 0.01 lot in gold?

With a 100 ounce contract, 0.01 lot is 1 ounce of gold, also called a micro lot. Each $1 move in the gold price changes the position by $1, so a $5 stop on 0.01 lot costs $5.

How much is 1 lot of gold?

One standard lot is 100 ounces with the contract size set here. At an illustrative $4,000 an ounce that is $400,000 of gold, and each $1 move in the price is worth $100. The margin you post for it depends on your leverage.

What XAUUSD lot size fits a $100 or a $1,000 account?

It depends on your risk and your stop. A $1,000 account risking 1% with a $5 stop comes to 0.02 lots. A $100 account on the same numbers comes to 0.002 lots, under the 0.01 lot that most brokers take as the smallest order. At 0.01 lot that $5 stop costs $5, which is 5% of $100.
