Worked example
Say you trade 0.1 lots of gold and your broker counts 0.01 as one pip. One standard lot is 100 ounces, so a pip on a full lot is 0.01 × 100 = $1. At 0.1 lots it is a tenth of that: $0.10 a pip.
A move of 100 pips is then 100 × $0.10 = $10. In the price that is $1 an ounce, gold going from $4,000.00 to $4,001.00.
If your broker counts 0.10 as one pip, the same 0.1 lots is worth $1 a pip, and 100 pips is a $10 move in the price, from $4,000 to $4,010, worth $100. Same size, ten times the dollars, because the pip is ten times bigger. That is why the setting matters.
The formula
Pip value per lot = pip × contract size. Pip value at your size = pip value per lot × lots. The move is worth = pip value at your size × pips. Price move = pips × pip.
To see which pip your broker uses, open the XAUUSD contract specification on your platform. MetaTrader calls the smallest price step, 0.01, a point. Many brokers and traders call ten points, 0.10, a pip, and others count every 0.01 as a pip.

Does the gold price change the pip value?
No. XAUUSD is quoted in US dollars, so a pip is the pip size × the ounces you hold, in dollars, whether gold is at $2,000 or $4,000. It changes only when you convert it into another currency.
Is a gold pip calculator the same as an XAUUSD pip calculator?
Yes. XAUUSD is spot gold priced in US dollars, so both work out the same thing: what a pip is worth at your lot size.
