Worked example
You buy 0.1 lots of gold at $4,000 and close at $4,025. With a 100 ounce contract, 0.1 lots is 10 ounces, so every $1 the price moves is worth $10 to you. The $25 move makes 10 × $25 = $250.
In pips it depends on your broker. Count 0.01 as one pip and the move is 2,500 pips at $0.10 each on 0.1 lots. Count 0.10 as one pip and it is 250 pips at $1 each. Both come to $250.
Sell instead and the same move loses $250. If your broker charges $7 a lot in commission, 0.1 lots pays $0.70 and the profit is $249.30.
The formula
Profit or loss = (exit − entry) × lots × contract size, turned around for a sell, minus commission × lots. Ounces = lots × contract size. Pips = (exit − entry) ÷ pip. Pip value at this size = pip × ounces.
Most brokers use 100 ounces for one standard lot of XAUUSD, so 0.01 lots is 1 ounce and each $1 move is worth $1. Check the contract specification on your platform, because some use other sizes. To pick the lot size from what you are willing to lose, use the gold lot size calculator.

Questions and answers
How do I calculate profit on gold?
Take the price move, then multiply by your lots and by the contract size. Buying 0.1 lots at $4,000 and selling at $4,025 is $25 × 0.1 × 100 = $250.
How much is a $1 move in gold per lot?
$100 on one standard lot of 100 ounces, $10 on 0.1 lots and $1 on 0.01 lots.
How much profit is 100 pips on gold?
It depends on what your broker calls a pip. With a 0.01 pip, 100 pips is a $1 move: $100 on one lot and $1 on 0.01 lots. With a 0.10 pip, 100 pips is a $10 move: $1,000 on one lot and $10 on 0.01 lots.
Is the spread included?
Type the prices you really trade at and it is: you buy at the ask and sell at the bid. Commission has its own box, and swap on positions held overnight is not counted.
