Worked example

You put $1,000 into a coin at $2,000 and the fee is 0.1% on each side. The buy fee takes $1, so $999 buys 0.4995 coins.

You sell at $2,300. The sale is worth $1,148.85 and the sell fee takes $1.15, leaving $1,147.70. Profit is $147.70 on the $1,000, or +14.77%. Fees cost $2.15 in total.

To come out even you need to sell at $2,004.01, not $2,000. It is a small gap at 0.1%, but at a 0.5% fee the break-even climbs to about $2,020.

The formula

Coins = amount × (1 − fee) ÷ buy price. You get back = coins × sell price × (1 − fee). Profit = what you get back − amount. Break-even = buy price ÷ (1 − fee)².

For futures, use the funding fee calculator as well, because funding adds a cost that spot trades do not have.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate crypto profit?

Take the fee off the amount, divide by the buy price to get coins, multiply by the sell price, take the sell fee off, then subtract what you put in.

Why is my break-even above my buy price?

You pay a fee on the way in and on the way out. At 0.1% each side, a $2,000 buy needs to sell at about $2,004.01 to cover both.

Are taxes included?

No. The calculator covers trading fees only. Tax on crypto depends on where you live.
