Line drawing: a trail of bare footprints, each a sole and five toes, crossing a dotted floor toward the front right, drawn in white lines that are dimmer the older the print; the newest print is blue, with rings spreading on the floor round it, and the next one, not yet taken, is only dotted.

Open a free footprint chart on Pravex

Open a Bitcoin chart on Pravex, or any other coin, and set the timeframe you trade. Then:

  1. Open the chart type menu in the top bar.
  2. Pick Volume footprint. If the chart is zoomed out, Pravex zooms in so the numbers fit.
  3. Open Settings and the Price tab for the footprint's options, such as Type (Buy and Sell, Delta, Total, Ladder), Display (Cluster or Profile) and Imbalance ratio, plus a Summary box or table with each candle's volume and delta.

If the legend says "Footprint from now", Pravex is reading that market from another exchange and the cells fill from new trades only.

How to read a footprint chart

A footprint chart splits each candle into price rows and shows the volume that traded at each row. Every row records two volumes: sell volume (market sells filled at the bid) and buy volume (market buys filled at the ask). Delta is buy minus sell. An imbalance is a row where one side outweighs the other by a set ratio, which the Imbalance ratio option sets. The candle's point of control (POC) is the row with the most volume, and Show POC marks it.

Example: say a 15-minute Bitcoin candle traded in three price rows (made-up round numbers, in BTC). At $50,200 sells were 10 and buys 40, so the row's delta is 40 − 10 = +30. At $50,100 sells were 50 and buys 40: 40 − 50 = −10. At $50,000 sells were 20 and buys 10: 10 − 20 = −10. The candle's delta is the three rows added up: +30 − 10 − 10 = +10. The busiest row is $50,100 with 50 + 40 = 90 BTC, so that is the candle's point of control. Buyers won the top row four to one and sellers won the other two, so +10 is small against the 170 BTC that traded.

When a footprint helps and when a plain candle is enough

In our view a footprint helps when you already have a reason to look inside one candle: a breakout candle on a liquid pair, or a push into a level that stalled. There it shows what a plain candle hides. An up candle can close higher on a negative delta, which means more of its volume was market sells. If you trade the daily chart and hold for days, a plain candle is enough.

It fails where trades are few. On a thin coin a row can hold only a few trades, and one large order flips it from mostly buys to mostly sells. Shorter candles thin the rows out the same way, so the lowest timeframes give the noisiest numbers. Read sparse cells as noise.

History is the other limit. Older footprint candles on Pravex are built from candles, not trades, so they are an estimate of where volume sat.
