What it is
CPI measures how much a fixed basket of goods and services costs US consumers compared with a month and a year earlier. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it about two weeks after the month ends. Traders watch the headline number and the core number, which leaves out food and energy.
Why crypto traders watch it
Inflation drives what the Fed does with rates, and rate expectations move bitcoin and the dollar. A CPI print well above forecasts tends to push rate-cut hopes back, and crypto often swings in the first hour after 8:30 a.m. ET. Spreads widen and stops get hit on both sides, so many traders cut size or wait for the first candle to close.
Release time in India
BLS releases CPI at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. In India that is 6:00 p.m. IST while the US is on daylight time, and 7:00 p.m. IST from 2 November 2026 after the clocks change.
If the US government shuts down
BLS and BEA stop publishing when US government funding lapses, and their dates move. As of 30 September 2026, federal agencies are funded through 11 December 2026 under H.R. 6500, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, signed on 2 September 2026 (White House statement). The October and November releases fall inside that window. The December releases land before it, so a lapse would first hit later data. In the shutdown that began on 1 October 2025, the September 2025 jobs report came out on 20 November instead of early October.

What time is CPI released in India?
At 6:00 p.m. IST while US daylight time runs, and at 7:00 p.m. IST after the US clocks go back on 1 November. The November and December 2026 releases are at 7:00 p.m. IST.
Can the CPI date change?
Yes. BLS stops publishing when US government funding lapses. Agencies are funded through 11 December 2026, which covers the October, November and December CPI dates.
