Why gold opens on Sunday evening

Gold keeps New York's clock. Gold futures on CME Globex open every Sunday at 6:00 p.m. New York time and close on Friday at 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour break each day from 5:00 p.m. (CME's gold contract page). Sunday evening in New York is already Monday morning across Asia, which is why traders there ask when gold opens on Monday.

Spot gold at a broker keeps the same week. Each broker picks its own opening minute, though, and some start up to an hour apart, so check your platform once.

Example: it is Saturday 24 October 2026, 10:00 a.m. in New York, and you want to place a trade. Gold shut at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. It opens again on Sunday 25 October at 6:00 p.m., 32 hours later.

The clock change on 1 November 2026

US clocks go back an hour on Sunday 1 November. Gold keeps New York's clock, so in New York nothing moves: it still opens on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Everywhere that does not change its clocks that day, gold moves an hour later: in India from 4:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, in the UAE from 03:00 to 03:00, in Jakarta from 06:00 to 06:00. It stays that way until the US moves its clocks forward again in March 2027.

The weekend

Spot gold has no weekend price. From Friday 5:00 p.m. to Sunday 6:00 p.m. New York time the market is shut, and the price on your screen is Friday's last one.

What does trade is the gold perpetual, a contract on crypto exchanges that runs all seven days. It is a separate market that can drift from spot gold while the real one is shut. Read it as the weekend's mood. The week's first price is set when the market opens.

Holidays

Gold does not trade on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, or on New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027. The sessions around them run short, and so does US Thanksgiving: on Thursday 26 November 2026 gold stops early, at 2:30 p.m. New York time. Silver keeps the same days and hours, and so do US oil (WTI) futures. CME fixes the exact holiday hours about two weeks ahead on its holiday calendar. The "Coming up" list above shows them once they are near.

At 6:00 p.m. New York time. On Sunday 1 November that is 23:00 in the UK, 03:00 on Monday in the UAE and 4:30 a.m. on Monday in India. From Sunday 1 November it is an hour later outside the US and the UK.

What time does gold close on Friday?

At 5:00 p.m. New York time: 21:00 UK time, 01:00 on Saturday in the UAE and 2:30 a.m. on Saturday in India.

Almost. It trades 23 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time, with a one-hour pause from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

When does the silver market open?

Silver (XAGUSD) keeps gold's hours: it opens on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. New York time and closes on Friday at 5:00 p.m., with the same one-hour pause at 5:00 p.m. each day and the same holiday hours. On Sunday 1 November that is 23:00 in the UK, 03:00 on Monday in the UAE and 4:30 a.m. on Monday in India. The card at the top of this page says whether it is open right now.

Is the gold market open on Thanksgiving?

Yes, for a shorter day. On Thanksgiving, Thursday 26 November, gold stops early at 2:30 p.m. New York time and opens again at 6:00 p.m. The next day it stops at 2:45 p.m. and stays shut until Sunday 29 November at 6:00 p.m. Silver keeps the same hours.

Is gold trading on Christmas Day?

No. Gold stops early on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, at 1:45 p.m. New York time and stays shut through Christmas Day. It opens again on Sunday 27 December at 6:00 p.m.

What time does gold close on Christmas Eve?

At 1:45 p.m. New York time on Thursday 24 December, earlier than the usual 5:00 p.m. That is 18:45 UK time, 22:45 in the UAE and 12:15 a.m. on Friday in India.
