Why the gold week starts on Sunday in Nigeria
Gold keeps New York's clock. Gold futures on CME Globex open every Sunday at 6:00 p.m. New York time and close on Friday at 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour break each day from 5:00 p.m. (CME's gold contract page). Sunday 6:00 p.m. in New York is Sunday 23:00 WAT in Nigeria, so that is when the gold week starts.
Spot gold at a broker keeps the same week. Each broker picks its own opening minute, though, and some start up to an hour apart, so check your platform once.
Example: it is Saturday 31 October, 10:00, and you want to place a trade. Gold shut on Friday at 22:00 WAT. It opens again on Monday 2 November at 00:00 WAT, 38 hours later.
The clock change on Sunday 1 November
Nigeria keeps one clock all year; the US does not. US clocks go back an hour on Sunday 1 November. From Monday 2 November gold opens at 00:00 WAT, the daily pause moves to 23:00–00:00 WAT, and the market closes on Friday at 23:00 WAT. It stays that way until the US moves its clocks forward again in March.
The weekend: gold stands still
Spot gold has no weekend price. From Friday 22:00 WAT to Sunday 23:00 WAT the market is shut, and the price on your screen is the week's last one.
What does trade is the gold perpetual, a contract on crypto exchanges that runs all seven days. It is a separate market that can drift from spot gold while the real one is shut. Read it as the weekend's mood; the week's first price is set when the market opens.
Holidays
Gold does not trade on Christmas Day, Friday, 25 December 2026, or on New Year's Day, Friday, 1 January 2027. The sessions around them run short, and so does US Thanksgiving on Thursday, 26 November 2026: gold stops early, at 20:30 WAT on Thursday. CME fixes the exact holiday hours about two weeks ahead on its holiday calendar. The coming-up list above shows them once they are near.

Is the gold market open on Thanksgiving?
Yes, for a shorter day. On US Thanksgiving, Thursday 26 November, gold stops early on Thursday 26 November, 20:30 WAT and opens again on Friday 27 November, 00:00 WAT. The next day it stops on Friday 27 November, 20:45 WAT and stays shut until Monday 30 November, 00:00 WAT. Silver keeps the same hours.
Is gold trading on Christmas Day?
No. Gold stops early for Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December in the US) on Thursday 24 December, 19:45 WAT and stays shut through Christmas Day. It opens again on Monday 28 December, 00:00 WAT.
What time does gold close on Christmas Eve?
Earlier than usual: on Thursday 24 December, 19:45 WAT. Christmas Eve is Thursday 24 December in the US, and gold stays shut until Monday 28 December, 00:00 WAT.
