Worked example
Your account holds $10,000 and you risk 1% on the trade, so the most it may cost is $100.00. The stop sits 100 points away. On the preset lot one point is worth $1.00, so the stop costs $100.00 a lot.
$100.00 ÷ $100.00 = 1.00 lot. That is 1 contract. If the stop fills you lose $100.00, the 1% you planned.
At an illustrative price of 46,000, the position is worth $46,000.00, a stop for a buy sits at 45,900 and for a sell at 46,100.
The formula
Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop in points × point value of one lot). Point value of one lot = point size × contract per lot, in US dollars because US30 is quoted in dollars.
Position value = lots × contract × price. The stop prices are the price minus the stop distance for a buy and plus it for a sell. US30 is the CFD name for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, 30 large US companies. The form starts at 1 contract per lot and a point of 1.0, so one lot moves $1 for each point, and 0.1 is offered for brokers that quote a tenth of a point as the pip.
