Worked example

Your account holds $5,000 and you risk 1% on the trade, so the most it may cost is $50.00. The stop sits 80 points away. On the preset lot one point is worth $1.00, so the stop costs $80.00 a lot.

$50.00 ÷ $80.00 = 0.625 lots. That is 0.63 contracts. If the stop fills you lose $50.00, the 1% you planned.

At an illustrative price of 25,000, the position is worth $15,625.00, a stop for a buy sits at 24,920 and for a sell at 25,080.

The formula

Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop in points × point value of one lot). Point value of one lot = point size × contract per lot, in US dollars because NAS100 is quoted in dollars.

Position value = lots × contract × price. The stop prices are the price minus the stop distance for a buy and plus it for a sell. NAS100 is the CFD name for the Nasdaq 100, the 100 largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq exchange. The form starts at 1 contract per lot and a point of 1.0, so one lot moves $1 for each point. The index moves many points a day, so stops in points are wide and lots come out small.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate lot size for NAS100?

Divide the money at risk by the stop in points times the point value of one lot. Risking $50 with an 80 point stop at $1 a point per lot gives 0.625 lots.

How much is 1 lot of NAS100 per point?

With the preset of 1 contract per lot it is $1 a point. A lot of 10 contracts would make it $10 a point, so type your broker's contract size and the result follows.

Why are NAS100 stops so wide in points?

The Nasdaq 100 sits in the tens of thousands, so a normal day covers hundreds of points. A stop has to sit outside that noise, and the lot size shrinks to keep the risk the same.
