Worked example

Your account holds $5,000 and you risk 1% on the trade, so the most it may cost is $50.00. The stop sits 25 pips away. On the preset lot one pip is worth $50.00, so the stop costs $1,250.00 a lot.

$50.00 ÷ $1,250.00 = 0.04 lots. That is 200 oz. If the stop fills you lose $50.00, the 1% you planned.

At an illustrative price of 50, the position is worth $10,000.00, a stop for a buy sits at 49.75 and for a sell at 50.25. On this page the price field fills with the live silver (XAG/USD) price, so these lines start from today's level.

The formula

Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop in pips × pip value of one lot). Pip value of one lot = pip size × contract per lot, in US dollars because XAG/USD is quoted in dollars.

Position value = lots × contract × price. The stop prices are the price minus the stop distance for a buy and plus it for a sell. Silver is quoted in US dollars per ounce. The form starts at 5,000 ounces per lot and offers both pip habits: 0.01, a cent of price, and 0.001.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate lot size for silver?

Divide the money at risk by the stop in pips times the pip value of one lot. On a 5,000 ounce lot a pip of 0.01 is worth $50, so risking $50 with a 25 pip stop gives 0.04 lots.

How many ounces are in one lot of silver?

The form starts at 5,000 ounces, so 0.01 lot is 50 ounces. If your broker's lot holds a different number, type it and everything follows.

Where does the live silver price come from?

From the SILVER market on Hyperliquid, its oracle price for spot XAG/USD, read when the page opens. It fills the price field so the stop prices and the position value start from today. Type your own price to replace it.
