Worked example

Your account holds $2,000 and you risk 1% on the trade, so the most it may cost is $20.00. The stop sits 20 points away. On the preset lot one point is worth $1.00, so the stop costs $20.00 a lot.

$20.00 ÷ $20.00 = 1.00 lot. That is 1 contract. If the stop fills you lose $20.00, the 1% you planned.

At an illustrative price of 7,000, the position is worth $7,000.00, a stop for a buy sits at 6,980 and for a sell at 7,020. On this page the price field fills with the live SP500 price, so these lines start from today's level.

The formula

Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop in points × point value of one lot). Point value of one lot = point size × contract per lot, in US dollars because US500 is quoted in dollars.

Position value = lots × contract × price. The stop prices are the price minus the stop distance for a buy and plus it for a sell. US500 is the CFD name for the S&P 500, 500 large US companies. The form starts at 1 contract per lot and a point of 1.0, so one lot moves $1 for each point. The S&P moves fewer points a day than the Dow or the Nasdaq, so stops are shorter in points.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate lot size for US500?

Divide the money at risk by the stop in points times the point value of one lot. Risking $20 with a 20 point stop at $1 a point per lot gives 1 lot.

How much is 1 lot of US500 per point?

With the preset of 1 contract per lot it is $1 a point. A lot of 10 contracts would make it $10 a point, so type your broker's contract size and the result follows.

Where does the live price come from?

From the SP500 market on Hyperliquid, its oracle price, read when the page opens. It is there so the stop prices and the position value start from today's level. Your broker's quote can sit a little away from it, so type that one if you trade from it.
