Worked example

Your account holds $3,000 and you risk 2% on the trade, so the most it may cost is $60.00. The stop sits 30 pips away. On the preset lot one pip is worth $10.00, so the stop costs $300.00 a lot.

$60.00 ÷ $300.00 = 0.20 lots. That is 200 barrels. If the stop fills you lose $60.00, the 2% you planned.

At an illustrative price of 90, the position is worth $18,000.00, a stop for a buy sits at 89.70 and for a sell at 90.30. On this page the price field fills with the live WTI price, so these lines start from today's level.

The formula

Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop in pips × pip value of one lot). Pip value of one lot = pip size × contract per lot, in US dollars because WTI crude oil is quoted in dollars.

Position value = lots × contract × price. The stop prices are the price minus the stop distance for a buy and plus it for a sell. Crude oil CFDs are quoted in US dollars per barrel, and WTI often goes by USOIL on trading platforms. The form starts at 1,000 barrels per lot and a pip of 0.01, one cent of price. The same math works for Brent: type its price and your broker's barrels per lot.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate lot size for oil?

Divide the money at risk by the stop in pips times the pip value of one lot. On a 1,000 barrel lot a pip of 0.01 is worth $10, so risking $60 with a 30 pip stop gives 0.2 lots.

How many barrels are in one lot of oil?

The form starts at 1,000 barrels, so 0.1 lot is 100 barrels. If your broker's lot holds a different number, type it and the result follows.

Where does the live oil price come from?

From the CL market on Hyperliquid, its oracle price for WTI crude, read when the page opens. It fills the price field so the stop prices and the position value start from today. Type your own price to replace it.
