Worked example

You hold 0.5 lots on the preset of 1,000 barrels per lot. One pip of 0.01 is worth $10.00 a lot, so at your size it is worth $5.00.

A move of 40 pips makes or costs $200.00. On 0.01 lot the same pip is worth $0.10.

At an illustrative price of 90, a 1% move is 0.9 of price, worth $450.00 at your size. The page fills in the live WTI price, so the 1% line starts from today's level.

The formula

Pip value = pip size × contract per lot × lots, in US dollars. A move is worth the pip value times its size in pips. A 1% move = price ÷ 100 ÷ pip size × pip value.

Crude oil CFDs are quoted in US dollars per barrel, and WTI often goes by USOIL on trading platforms. The form starts at 1,000 barrels per lot and a pip of 0.01, one cent of price. The same math works for Brent: type its price and your broker's barrels per lot.
