Why crypto has no opening bell
Gold, oil and stock indices trade on exchanges with set hours. Crypto trades on many venues at once, each running its own order book around the clock, so there is no shared open or close. Bitcoin trades on Saturday, on Christmas Day and in the middle of the night, under the same rules as on a Tuesday.
What traders do plan around are a few fixed times. The daily candle on most charts closes at 00:00 UTC, which is 8:00 PM ET, and the weekly candle closes on Sunday 7:00 PM. A daily close is the price many traders read for the day.
Funding on perpetuals
A perpetual contract never expires, so it pays funding between longs and shorts to stay near the spot price. On Hyperliquid funding is paid every hour (Hyperliquid's docs). Bybit pays it every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC, which is 8:00 PM, 4:00 AM, 12:00 PM ET (Bybit's contract overview). You pay or receive it only if you hold a position at that moment. CME bitcoin futures trade 24/7 too
Since 29 May 2026, CME's crypto futures trade around the clock as well (CME's announcement). They stop for two short maintenance breaks: on Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 a.m. Chicago time (Sat 3:00 AM–5:00 AM ET) and for two minutes at 4:00 p.m. Chicago time on weekdays (Mon–Fri 5:00 PM–5:02 PM) (CME's contract page). CME follows Chicago's clock, so these move when the US changes its clocks.

Does the crypto market close?
No. Crypto trades 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays. A single exchange can pause for maintenance, but the market as a whole never closes.
What time does the crypto daily candle close?
At 00:00 UTC on most charts, which is 8:00 PM ET. The weekly candle closes on Sunday 7:00 PM.
Is crypto open on weekends?
Yes. Bitcoin and other coins trade on Saturday and Sunday like any other day. CME bitcoin futures trade through the weekend too, apart from a two-hour maintenance break on Saturday morning, Chicago time.
When is funding paid?
On Hyperliquid every hour, on the hour. On Bybit every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC, which is 8:00 PM, 4:00 AM, 12:00 PM ET.
What time does crypto open on Monday?
It never shut, so there is no Monday open. The weekly candle starts at 00:00 UTC on Monday, Sunday 7:00 PM.
