Average daily range, live
How far a market has moved today, from its high to its low, next to how far it usually moves in a whole day. Pick a market to see today against its 14-session average, its ATR, the usual range of the Asia, London and New York sessions, and the last ten sessions.

The average high to low inside each session over the last 20 full sessions. An hour counts when it starts inside the session. London and New York overlap from 08:00 to 12:00 New York time, so those hours count in both.

Gold, silver, oil, SP500 and XYZ100: the day from 17:00 to 17:00 New York time, named by the day it ends, with no weekend sessions. Bitcoin: the UTC day.
Worked example
These are illustrative numbers, not a real market. Say gold's last 14 sessions ranged $1,050 in total from high to low. The average daily range is 1,050 ÷ 14 = $75.
If gold has moved $45 between today's high and low so far, it has used 45 ÷ 75 = 60% of a usual day. At 100% today matches the average; past 100% it is a bigger day than usual.
ATR also counts gaps. Say yesterday closed at $4,000, and today opened at $4,020 and traded between $4,010 and $4,060. The high to low range is $50, but the true range is the largest of 4,060 − 4,010 = 50, 4,060 − 4,000 = 60 and 4,010 − 4,000 = 10: $60. With yesterday's ATR at $70, today's is (70 × 13 + 60) ÷ 14 = $69.29.
How we measure
A session's range is its high minus its low. The average daily range is the plain average of the last 14 full sessions. Today's range so far uses the session running now, with the live price.
ATR (14) is Wilder's average true range. The true range is the largest of high − low, high − the previous close and the previous close − low, and each new day counts for one 14th: ATR = (yesterday's ATR × 13 + today's true range) ÷ 14.
Gold and silver come from Pravex's own price recorder, the same hour bars our gold chart draws; oil, SP500, XYZ100 and bitcoin from Hyperliquid's hour candles, kept to each market's trading hours. The live price updates every few seconds. We store nothing.

Questions and answers
What is a good average daily range for gold?
There is no good or bad number; it changes with the news. The tiles above show gold's own average over its last 14 sessions, worked out today. Compare today against that, not against a number from a year ago.
What is the difference between ADR and ATR?
The average daily range is the plain average of high minus low. ATR also counts the gap from the previous close, so after a gap it comes out larger, and it uses Wilder's smoothing, which reacts more slowly.
How do traders use the average daily range?
To size stops and targets to the market's usual day, and to judge how much room is left. If gold has already moved 120% of its average by midday, a target another average day away is a long shot.
Which session moves the most?
The table above shows it for the market you pick, from the last 20 sessions. For gold the New York morning has usually moved most; the hour by hour picture is on the best time to trade gold page.
Why does bitcoin have weekend sessions and gold does not?
Bitcoin trades all week, so each UTC day is a session. Gold, silver, oil and the index markets stop from Friday 17:00 to Sunday 18:00 New York time, so their weekends are not counted.
