Two clocks: the futures and the cash session

US30, NAS100 and US500 are the names most brokers give contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nasdaq-100 and the S&P 500. Two sets of hours matter. The futures on CME Globex trade nearly all week, from Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. New York time, and stop for an hour from 5:00 p.m. each day (CME's contract page). The cash session is when the stocks in the index trade on the exchanges, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New York time (NYSE's hours).

A broker's index contract usually trades close to the futures hours, though each broker sets its own and some take a longer break each day. Check your platform once and keep the cash open in mind: many traders plan around 9:30 a.m. in New York, when the stocks start trading.
