Volume

Price Volume Trend (PVT) on Bitcoin

The Price Volume Trend adds up volume, signed by the direction of the move and scaled by its size. A rising line says volume has been backing the up moves. A falling line says it has been backing the down moves.

Each percent move is weighted by the candle’s volume, which spot gold does not have, so this chart runs on Hyperliquid bitcoin.

What it shows

A running-total line below the bitcoin candles. Its level means nothing by itself, since it depends on where the loaded data starts. Its direction and shape against the price are what you read.

How Pravex works it out

  1. Work out how far each close moved from the one before it, as a fraction: +0.01 for a 1% rise.
  2. Multiply it by that candle’s volume.
  3. PVT = the running total of these values, from the first loaded candle.
  4. Two invented candles: one that closes 1% above the previous close on a volume of 500 adds 0.01 × 500 = 5. A 1% fall on the same volume takes 5 off.

How traders read it

When bitcoin and the PVT climb together, each up candle is bringing real volume with it, and that rise has more behind it than one where the PVT goes flat.

Disagreement is the second read. Price makes a new high while the PVT fails to, and the push is running on thin volume. The reverse, a PVT making new highs before price does, is read as volume getting ahead.

Because the percent move scales each step, a small candle on huge volume adds little, and a big candle on modest volume can add a lot. That differs from a plain volume total, which counts size of volume only.

When it misleads

The line is cumulative, so one huge candle stays in it forever and can tilt the shape for a long stretch. The start point is the first loaded candle, so two charts with different history show different levels; compare the direction only. On bitcoin, a spike of volume during a liquidation wick moves the PVT sharply with no sign of a lasting trend.

Questions and answers

Is PVT the same as Volume Price Trend?

Yes, the two names describe one running total of percent change times volume. Pravex lists it as Price Volume Trend.

Price Volume Trend vs On Balance Volume?

On Balance Volume adds or subtracts the whole volume depending on the direction. The PVT multiplies the volume by the percent move, so the size of the move matters too.

Does the PVT have settings?

No. The app shows no inputs for it. It always reads the close and the volume of each candle.

Why does my PVT level differ from another chart?

The total starts at the first loaded candle, so the level depends on how much history is loaded. Compare the direction and the shape, not the number.
