Profiles
Periodic Volume Profile Indicator
The Periodic Volume Profile builds a separate volume histogram for each calendar period you choose, from one day up to a year. It is the session profile with a length you can change, so you can look at weekly or monthly balance areas.
A volume profile needs traded volume, which spot gold does not report, so this page uses bitcoin from Hyperliquid.

What it shows
A box for each period with horizontal bars along the price scale, split into up and down volume. The period’s point of control (POC) is drawn as a red line, and its value area is the band of stronger-shaded rows. Lines for the value area edges can be switched on in the Style tab; they start hidden.
How Pravex works it out
- Pravex reads small candles (1-minute, or 30-minute on daily and longer charts, coarser when the stretch would need more than 20,000) and groups them into periods by their UTC time.
- A 1, 2 or 3 day period is a block of whole UTC days counted from a fixed starting date, not from the first candle on your chart. A week runs from Monday 00:00 UTC (two weeks pair up in the same fixed way). Months, 3 months, 6 months and a year follow the calendar, so 3 months means January to March, April to June and so on.
- For each period the price range from its low to its high is cut into rows (a fixed row count divides it into that many rows, a fixed row height makes every row that many ticks tall). A small candle that spans several rows splits its volume between them by how much of each row it overlaps. Up volume comes from candles that closed at or above their open; the rest is down volume.
- Its POC is whichever row holds the most total volume. The value area grows out from it, adding the bigger of the next row above and below, until it holds the chosen share of the period’s volume.
Settings
| Setting | Default | What changing it does |
|---|---|---|
| Profile length | 1 day | How long each profile runs: 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year. A longer length shows a broader balance area and fewer profiles on the screen. |
| Bar style | Up/Down | Up/Down splits each row into its up and down parts, Total shows a single bar per row, and Delta shows the up part minus the down part, coloured for whichever side was larger. Whatever the bar style, the POC and value area are worked out from total volume. |
| Share in the value area | 70 | What percent of the period’s volume goes inside the value area. Lower it and the area tightens around the POC; at 100 every row is inside. Any value from 0 to 100 works. |
| How rows are sized | Number Of Rows | Row count or row height: either each period’s range is split into a set number of rows, or every row is a set number of ticks tall, so a wider range gets more of them. |
| Rows (or ticks per row) | 24 | In row-count mode this is how many rows; in row-height mode it is how many ticks each row spans. A higher number shows more detail and more noise. Row heights round up to whole ticks, so the profile can end up with fewer rows than the number set. |
| Carry POC line right | off | Draws the POC line on to the right until a later candle trades at that price, or to the edge of the chart if none does. Handy for seeing which old POCs have not been revisited. |
| Carry value area high right | off | The same extension for the value area high line. |
| Carry value area low right | off | The same extension for the value area low line. |
| Histogram width | 70 | How much of each period’s box the longest bar may fill. It changes the look, not the numbers. |
| Placement | Left | Whether the bars grow from the left or the right edge of each period’s box. |
How traders read it
Weekly and monthly profiles are where this indicator earns its place. A weekly POC marks the price the market agreed on during that week, and traders watch whether the next week opens inside that value area (balance) or outside it (a possible new range). Extending the POC to the right shows which of those levels price has not touched again.
A made-up case: last month’s value area ran from 90 to 110 and price is now at 115. Some traders would look at 110 as the first level to test on a pullback. The profile shows where the volume was, and you decide what that means for your plan.
When it misleads
A period that has just started has little volume, so its first profile is thin and the POC jumps about. Periods are cut at UTC midnight and, for multi-day blocks, from a fixed date, so a 2-day period will not necessarily start on the day you expect. Volume is spread evenly across each small candle’s range and split into up and down by candle direction, so the fine detail is approximate.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between the periodic and the session volume profile?
The session profile is always one day. The periodic profile lets you pick the length: days, weeks, months or a year.
Which profile length should I pick?
We would start with 1 week on a 1-hour chart, and move to 1 month on a 4-hour chart when you want broader balance areas.
Do weekly profiles start on Monday?
Yes, at Monday 00:00 UTC. Bitcoin trades through the weekend, so the weekend volume sits in the same week as the days before it.
What replaces a volume profile on gold?
Spot gold carries no exchange volume, so use the Market Profile TPO page, which counts time at each price and needs no volume. This page draws bitcoin from Hyperliquid.
