Chop Zone Indicator on Gold

The Chop Zone turns the slope of a moving average into a colour. A steep climb or fall gets a strong colour, and a flat average gets yellow, which is the choppy state the name points at.

What it shows

A strip of equal-height columns in their own pane under the price, one per candle. The height means nothing; only the colour does. Nine colours run from turquoise (steep rise) through dark green, light green and teal, to yellow (flat), then light orange, orange, pink and dark red (steep fall).

How Pravex works it out

  1. Take a 34-candle EMA of the close, and the highest high and lowest low of the last 30 candles.
  2. For each candle, divide the EMA’s step from the previous candle by the typical price, (high + low + close) ÷ 3, and scale it by 25 ÷ (30-candle range) × the lowest low. That turns it into a slope.
  3. Turn the slope into an angle in degrees, rounded to a whole number. It is positive when the EMA rose.
  4. Colour by angle: 5 or more turquoise, 4 dark green, 3 light green, 1 or 2 teal, 0 yellow, -1 or -2 light orange, -3 orange, -4 pink, -5 or less dark red.
  5. The lengths are fixed in the code, so the indicator has no settings.

How traders read it

Read the strip as a calm trend gauge. A run of green and turquoise says the average has been climbing at a steady angle, and a run of orange and red says it has been falling.

Yellow and the nearby pale colours mark the chop: the average is close to flat, and the price is moving without a trend. A trend trader can read a yellow strip as a reason to wait, and look again once it turns a strong colour.

The colour confirms late, since the EMA itself lags price.

When it misleads

The angle depends on the 30-candle range and the price level, so a given colour on a quiet day does not match the same colour in a fast market. A sharp one-candle spike can bend the average for several candles, and the strip keeps its colour after the spike has passed. On gold, a run of small candles can show yellow even when a slow trend is under way.

Questions and answers

Which Chop Zone colour is the strongest uptrend?

Turquoise. The nine colours are buckets of the EMA’s angle: turquoise for 5 degrees or more, dark red for -5 or less, yellow for flat.

Why does the Chop Zone have no settings?

The 34-candle EMA and the 30-candle range are fixed in the code, so there is nothing to adjust in its settings window.

What does yellow mean on the Chop Zone?

The rounded angle of the EMA is 0. The average is flat, which is the choppy state.

Is the Chop Zone the same as the Choppiness Index?

No. The Choppiness Index is one line from 0 to 100 built from candle ranges. The Chop Zone is a colour strip built from the slope of an EMA.
